After 25 hours and an entire bottle of bourbon, Eddie is ahead over $18,000, but loses it all along with all but $200 of his original stake. Fats agrees to continue after Bert labels Eddie a "loser". Eddie gets ahead $11,000 and Charlie tries to convince him to quit, but Eddie insists the game will end only when Fats says it is over. He sends out a runner, Preacher, to Johnny's Bar, ostensibly for whiskey, but really to get professional gambler Bert Gordon to the hall. After initially falling behind, Eddie surges back to being $1,000 ahead and suggests raising the bet to $1,000 a game Fats agrees. Fats arrives and he and Eddie agree to play straight pool for $200 a game. Arriving at Fats' home pool hall, Eddie declares he will win $10,000 that night. Small-time pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson travels cross-country with his partner Charlie to challenge the legendary player Minnesota Fats. In 1997, the Library of Congress selected The Hustler for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Academy Film Archive preserved The Hustler in 2003. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. The Hustler was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. It was followed by The Color of Money in 1986, with Newman reprising his role. The film was shot on location in New York City and stars Paul Newman as Eddie Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats Piper Laurie as Sarah and George C. He throws his raw talent and ambition up against the best player in the country, seeking to best the legendary pool player " Minnesota Fats". It tells the story of small-time pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson and his desire to break into the "major league" of professional hustling and high-stakes wagering that follows it. The Hustler is a 1961 American sports romantic drama film directed by Robert Rossen from Walter Tevis's 1959 novel of the same name, adapted by Rossen and Sidney Carroll.

“Our paper shows how DeepNash can be applied in situations of uncertainty and successfully balance its actions to help solve complex problems,” explains Julien Perolat, lead author of the study. The tool does not try to predict the possible moves an opponent may make, which is the standard approximation in game simulators – because the number of possibilities in the game tree is practically infinite – but instead establishes its own strategy and then adapts it based on how the game pans out. For this reason, the DeepMind team has developed a reinforcement learning algorithm that applies theoretical models based on Nash equilibrium, a theorem developed by American mathematician John Nash, a specialist in game theory. These two particular complexities make it impossible to take advantage of previous research to approach a game simulator for Stratego. Perfect information games do not present the same problem, as the chips are in plain sight. On the other hand, any move made on the first turn involves thinking of 10⁶⁶ possible pairs of chip configurations. This is no coincidence: the game has 10⁵³⁵ possible dispositions, considerably more than Texas Hold’em poker, a game of imperfect information with 10¹⁶⁴ possibilities in which players know only what cards they have in their hand and those that are in play, or Go, which has 10³⁶⁰ options. Until now, no-one had managed to develop a tool capable of playing Stratego at the same level as an expert human. DeepMindĭeepMind has a long history in the field, having developed cutting-edge tools to outperform humans in complex, long-term strategy games with perfect information, such as Go (using AphaGo), but also in imperfect information video games, such as StarCraft (using AlphaStar). Each player places their 40 pieces on the board, but does not know how their opponent has ordered theirs. Stratego consists of 12 types of pieces with different attributes. As such, DeepMind decided to set its sights on Stratego, a major challenge for the machine given the lack of information that it must manage during the game. It is a perfect litmus test to study how humans and machines develop and execute game-winning strategies. They offer a controlled environment with precise rules in which the tools can develop their abilities and where it is easy to measure their success: researchers simply have to see if they win the game or not. Game simulators have historically served as a good barometer to measure the effectiveness of computer programs. It also means that winning requires more cunning than in poker – where you don’t know your opponent’s cards either – and players require both intuition and mathematical knowledge. This uniqueness makes it a more complex game than Go, the 1,000-year-old Asian game whose board allows the tiles to be arranged in more different combinations than there are atoms in the universe. Stratego is characterized by a double challenge: it requires long-term strategic thinking, like chess, but you also need to manage imperfect information, as in poker, because the opponent’s chips are covered at the start of the game and only revealed as it progresses. Marketed by Jumbo Games since the 1960s, though invented before World War I in a very similiar format under the French name L’Attaque, Stratego was one of the few board games not yet mastered by artificial intelligence. The authors of the study believe that the algorithm could be applied in areas such as automatic traffic optimization. This represents a milestone due to the high complexity of the game, which combines elements of strategy, intuition (players do not have all the necessary information available to draw up perfect plans) and even bluffing. As detailed by a team of DeepMind researchers in an article published on December 1 in the journal Science, DeepNash (as the tool has been christened) is already ranked within the top three players on the specialist Gravon games platform, where it has been competing against human opponents. The UK-based company DeepMind, which has been owned by Google since 2014, has developed an algorithm capable of playing the popular board game Stratego like an expert human player. A serious threat to loggerheads is accidental capture in fishing equipment (such as nets, long lines and shrimp trawls), along with pollution and destruction to their nesting beaches. Today, these magnificent marine reptiles are classed as a Vulnerable species, with an estimated 60,000 nesting females left in the wild. Clever, eh? Once they’re bigger and stronger, they venture to lagoons, bays and shallow coastal waters, where they expand their diet and continue to grow. The youngsters who survive their treacherous trek to the sea drift amongst floating sargussum for some time, using the sargassum as both a protective cover and a food source. Once cooler temperatures signal that the sun has set, the hatchlings pop up and scurry toward the ocean, trying to avoid predators such as raccoons, crabs, snakes and birds along the way. The eggs hatch about 60 days later, and the new tiny turtles immediately make their way up through the sand, and wait just underneath the surface layer until nightfall. She then uses her hind flippers to dig her nesting hole, before gently laying the eggs inside. When a female is ready to lay her eggs, she comes ashore and uses her front flippers to clear a spot in the dry sand. And it’s on this very same beach that she lays her own eggs as an adult… Believe it or not, every two or three years, a female turtle may travel over 12,000km back to the beach where she hatched as a baby. Like other species of sea turtles, such as the leatherback and green sea turtle, loggerheads migrate huge distances between their feeding grounds and their breeding-nesting sites. They also eat softer foods, too, including jellyfish, some types of fish and occasionally seaweed and brown algae called ‘sargassum’. Using their strong, powerful jaws, they crush and munch on crunchy critters such as clams, crabs, mussels and sea urchins. So what’s on the menu for the lovely loggerhead? These magnificent marine creatures mostly feast on other ocean animals. They are the most common turtle species found in the Mediterranean, as well as in the coastal waters off the USA, where they can be seen swimming in the sea or nesting on sandy beaches.ĭid you know that we have a FREE downloadable Sea turtle primary resource? Great for teachers, homeschoolers and parents alike! Loggerhead turtles live in oceans all around the world, except in the coldest seas far north and south, near the Earth’s poles. They have a large, reddish-brown, hard shell, a pale yellow underbelly (or ‘plastron’) and four flippers with two (or sometimes three) claws on each. These incredible reptiles got their name from their oversized head, which looks a bit like – you guessed it! – a big log. If the limited individual ego in which we normally live is a small pond, then “Ong Namo” releases us into a vast and endless ocean. “Guru Dev Namo” calls on the subtle wisdom that guides you. “Dev” means subtle, etheric, divine, or belonging to the realms of God. The word can be broken into parts: “Gu” means darkness or ignorance “Ru” means light or knowledge so a “Guru” is something which can transform your “Gu” to “Ru”! It does not mean a personality, but the source of knowledge of the kind that transforms you, alleviates pain, and increases your awareness. It instructs the conscious and the subconscious to let go of the restrictions imposed by the ego. “Ong Namo” calls on your consciousness to become subtle and receptive to its own higher resources. It’s not a good idea to move your seedlings directly from the protected environment of your home into the garden. As the seedlings grow taller, raise the lights. Keep in mind that seedlings need darkness, too, so they can rest. If you’re growing under lights, adjust them so they’re just a few inches above the tops of the seedlings. Rotate the pots regularly to keep plants from leaning into the light. If you’re growing in a window, choose a south-facing exposure. Set the lights on a timer for 15 hours a day. Remember to feed the seedlings regularly with liquid fertilizer. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings. When you see the first signs of green, you have to remove the cover.Īs the seedlings grow up, you have to keep the soil moist but not soggy. This helps keep the seeds moist before they germinate. To speed up germination, cover the pots with wet paper or a plastic dome. After planting seeds, you have to moisten the newly planted seeds. Some of the small ones can be sprinkled right on the soil surface. Start with a fresh, sterile mix that will ensure healthy, disease-free seedlings. Groups created from inbox items are item groups, while groups created within projects are action groups (also sometimes called sub-projects). Group A collection of items nested hierarchically within another item. Items that are flagged are styled in orange for greater visibility. What this special designation means is completely up to you, but it’s a great way to keep important things from falling through the cracks. Flag A mark of privileged, eye-catching status bestowed on an item. For single action lists, all actions are equally available. First Available status is derived from an action’s position within a project and the project’s type: for sequential and parallel projects, the first available action is the first action in the project list. First Available An item state and View option that represents a project’s first action as the only one available. The exact meaning of Due Soon is configurable in Dates and Times preferences. Items that are due soon are styled in amber for greater visibility. Due Soon A designation for items whose due dates are approaching. Due Date A date and time assigned to an item by which the item must be completed. Use the inspector to set one of these as dropped. Dropped The status for a project, folder, action, or tag that is no longer being considered for completion. Also referred to as the Defer Until date. When the defer date is reached, the item becomes available for work. Defer Date A date and time assigned to an item that you don’t want to (or can’t) consider for completion until later. More rarely, you can open multiple database files at once to restore from a backup or archive, or view the contents of an OmniFocus database other than your own. Complete The status assigned to an item when you’ve finished it, or finished all the actions that comprise it (in the case of a project or group). The blocked state is derived from an action’s position in its project to unblock an action, either change the project to another type or move the action to the top of the project list. Blocked The state of an action in a sequential project that comes after the first available action. Availablilty is derived from an item’s defer date, project type, and project or tag status. Available An item state and View option that includes items that aren’t blocked, deferred, or on hold. Active status can be set on projects and tags using the inspector. Active The status for an item that’s planned for completion, or a tag that’s currently in use. Action Group Also referred to as a sub-project, an action group is a set of actions nested hierarchically within a parent action (which itself can be part of a project). Glossary Action An item that’s part of a project, or part of a group within a project. In Snorlax Snowman, two Lapras saved Pikachu and his friends after their ice boat fell apart.
